Changing Behaviour is Difficult but Possible
HR departments are losing the battle. The key reason is that we have been trying to treat leadership challenges (and all other managerial requirements) at the symptomatic level. We have been trying in most cases to get people to simply do the opposite of what they have been doing.
If a manager does not listen well we try to train them to listen well. If a manager does not show empathy, we train them to get him to show empathy. If a manager cannot manage change effectively we send them on a change management course. Seems logical but is has not been working as we have not gotten to the Root of the challenge.
Why can’t the manager listen well? Why can’t he or she show empathy? More importantly why can’t he/she still do it even after they are trained? We did not get to the Root of the problem!
Most often, the intervention is a classroom based course which is not based on spaced learning, not based on real world scenarios, no post training follow up implementation.
